The 10 best Vernaccia di San Gimignano to try

The following wines were tasted by Raffaele Mosca at the Regina Ribelle wine tasting in May 2024.

Five stars *****

Signano – Vernaccia di San Gimignano La Ginestra Riserva 2022

Lovely flinty tones over marzipan, saffron, broom, ripe peach and subdued oak spice – sweet and minerally at the same time, displaying a lovely chiaroscuro. Refreshing acidity underlies the medium to full-bodied core of golden apple and beeswax, while savory and spicy echoes gain prominence on the long and energetic finish.

Terre di Sovernaja – Vernaccia di San Gimignano Viti Sparse 2022

Chamomile, oyster shell and flint mingle with sweeter touches of ripe orchard fruits,  almond biscuits, and a subtle touch of quince. The same mix of invigorating savoriness, flinty elements and smoother flavors of stone fruits and beeswax echoes on the palate, making for a long and multilayered progression with a slightly warm yet balanced finish. Sourced from biodynamically-farmed vineyards.

Four stars plus **** +

Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara –  Vernaccia di San Gimignano L’ Albereta Riserva 2022

A bit shy but quite attractive with sweet almond, jasmine, and candied lemon peel, some smoky touches in the background. Not especially expressive in this phase but it already conveys excellent harmony through a combination of invigorating acidity, subtle phenolic touches, and tangy salinity. It just needs a bit of cellaring to gain more aromatic breadth.

Importers and retailers: Artisanal Cellars (United States)

Il Palagione – Vernaccia di San Gimignano Ori Riserva 2022

From some of the highest vineyards in the appellation, this is already very expressive, with iodine, grapefruit, a smoky whiff and some richer saffron and sweet almond nuances in the background. Broad and textural, serious acidity and minerally zing lifts the concentrated core of mellow orchard fruits. A balsamic touch extends the ample and suave finish.

Cappella Sant’ Andrea – Vernaccia di San Gimignano Rialto 2022

Rich and inviting nuances of quince, blonde tobacco, tangy spice and a touch of diesel fuel make for a complex nose. Fleshy and grippy – almost a bit tannic on the back end – with ripe acidity balancing the concentrated flavors, it feels slightly rustic but has plenty of potential for the long haul.

Four stars ****

Abbazia Monte Oliveto – Vernaccia di San Gimignano Gentilesca 2023

Fresh and lively, with lime, jasmine, and an attractive briny whiff. Chablis-like salinity backs the slim, mid-weight mouthfeel, lifting the moderately ripe stone fruits to the core and extending the zippy and tangy finish. Easygoing without being too light or simple, it will show even better with a year or two of cellaring.

Casa Lucii – Vernaccia di San Gimignano Madreterra Riserva 2019

Almond milk, white pepper and some sweet quince and acacia honey aromas shape the nose of this late-released Riserva, which spent about two years in oak and two more years in bottle. A lemony twang calibrates the rich and velvety mouthfeel, while spicy and smoky nuances resonate on the back, and the viscous and nutty flavors linger on the ample finish.

La Lastra – Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva 2022

Youthfully reticent but very linear and focused, dried herbs and lemon pith superimposes over white almonds, nectarine, and chamomile. More approachable on the palate, with zesty acids and zingy minerals adding lift, it is slim, racy and refreshing, showing only the slightest touch of glycerin-derived smoothness on the medium-long finish.

Importers and retailers: Vias Wine (United States)

Guicciardini Strozzi – Vernaccia di San Gimignano Titolato Strozzi 2023

Exuberant and attractive, with ginger, curry, lemon peel, jasmine, and a hint of iodine. It enters crisp and savory, then turns slightly smoother, with attractive nutty touches backing the mid-weight progression, minerals and a peppery touch extending the clear-cut finish.

Importers and retailers: Laithwates / Bibere Wine Import (UK) / Montcalm Wine Importers (US)

Fattoria di Fugnano – Vernaccia di San Gimignano Da Fugano 2023

Quite intense, with some matchstick reduction slowly fading away and leaving the floor to white pepper, iodine, and zesty lemon peel. Slim, lively and showing above-average tension, the crisp and pithy finish makes you crave for another sip. A very contemporary take on Vernaccia.
