Château Pichon Baron: The Architecture of Time in Pauillac

The turrets reflected in the water basin immediately show where you are. You are standing right opposite Latour, in the heart of Pauillac.

If a fairytale château exists in the Médoc, it is Pichon Baron. Yet behind the fairytale facade lies much more. There is an architecture of time carved into gravel and Cabernet Sauvignon.

From Historical Origins to “Super Second”

The origins of the estate date back to 1689 with Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan.

In 1850 the property was divided among the heirs. This division created Baron and Comtesse, two twin and rival châteaux separated only by a road. In 1851 Baron Raoul built the current Renaissance-style castle. The 1855 classification then recognized it as a Second Grand Cru Classé.

The modern era began in 1987 with the acquisition by AXA Millésimes. The group invested heavily in a complete renovation. They constructed a modern underground cellaring facility beneath the water feature.

Today the estate covers 73 hectares of vineyards. The historical 40 hectares on the Pauillac plateau are dedicated exclusively to the Grand Vin. It remains the ultimate super second. It is an austere, Cabernet-driven wine built to cross decades

The Tasting in the Panoramic Room

Above the vineyards, the tasting lines up four distinct glasses. The flight offers a masterclass in style and aging potential.

Les Tourelles de Longueville 2019

This wine reveals the Merlot-dominant side of the estate from the Sainte Anne plot. It shows immediate charm. The nose displays plum, cherry, and violet. The palate is soft, caressing, and approachable.

Les Griffons de Pichon Baron 2019

Composed of 59% Merlot and 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, this cuvée aged 18 months in barriques. The grapes come from the same old vines as the Grand Vin. On the palate, the wine delivers cassis, dark cherry, tobacco, and pencil lead. Finally, pure energy seamlessly combines with fine tannins

Château Pichon Baron 2019

A wine of absolute class. The blend features 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot with 80% new oak. It offers warm cassis, blueberry, violet, licorice, and graphite. Full and distinctive, its backbone promises thirty years of aging.

Château Pichon Baron 2017

Cabernet takes center stage in a classic and cooler vintage. It is currently the most ready of the four. It reveals cedar, sweet tobacco, and relaxed black fruit. The tannins are completely resolved.

The Proof of Time

This tasting demonstrates a simple truth. In Pauillac, technical precision meets the power of the terroir. Château Pichon Baron does not fear the passage of time. It simply waits for it.
