Abruzzo Wine Region

Abruzzo punches above its small size in terms of viticulture, with red Montepulciano d’Abruzzo being one of Italy’s most important DOC wines.

Its potential, however, hasn’t always been exploited to make quality wine: like most regions in Southern and Central Italy, Abruzzo produced – and still produces to a lesser extent – bulk wine shipped north to reinforce other wines. 

However, the average quality of regional wines has increased considerably in recent years, with large cooperatives producing better wines than ever before, and dozens of talented small producers.

What are the wine denominations of Abruzzo?

The main wine denominations of Abruzzo are:

  • Montepulciano d’Abruzzo
  • Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo
  • Trebbiano d’Abruzzo
  • Montepulciano d’ Abruzzo Colline Teramane: Colline Teramane is the most important subzone for Montepulciano d’ Abruzzo, corresponding to the Province of Teramo in the north of the region and giving some of the region’s finest red wines.
  • Terre Tollesi / Tullum: a small production enclave along the coast of the province of Chieti, producing whites and reds. 
    Terre di Casauria (yet to be approved)
  • Terre dei Vestini (yet to be approved)

The Consorzio Vini d’ Abruzzo has recently established four different subzone corresponding to the provinces of Abruzzo:

  • Colline Teramane 
  • Colline Pescaresi 
  • Terre di Chieti
  • Terre Aquilane
  • Colli Aprutini
